What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine?
The safe space. The community. Feeling accepted… always.
Occupation: Web Producer
Your motto or favorite quote:
Be present. It’s a struggle sometimes so I need to remind myself.
How long have you been pole dancing at Divine?
Since Feb 2018.
Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole?
Yes! I danced throughout childhood, learning ballet, jazz & modern, then continued learning different styles as an adult. I danced with a local belly dance troupe for a few years. I taught vinyasa style yoga and trained in the GYROTONIC method. I’ve also taken indoor climbing classes on and off over the years.
What made you decide to take pole dancing classes?
I had spent some time learning social dancing but didn’t love that dance scene. I left a lot of events feeling gross and “handled.” The lead-follow “rules” made me feel like I was losing my “self”, my “solo”- ness in my dance.
A teacher mentioned pole dancing to me and I thought.. damn it… yes, of course I need to learn pole. How have I not already found Pole? Learning pole dancing at Divine has helped me find my dance, my “self,” and real connections. While it’s still a process, I feel most open being myself/ sharing myself at Divine.
Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why?
Boudoir Drop-in! The warm-up goes by too fast. I get lost in the music, the connections, the space. I feel like I can be open. I can let go. It inspires my most authentic dances in the moment and I get to see the same in others!
Platforms or legwarmers?
What are you currently working on technically?
Just passed into Intermediate Inversions! I’m focusing on cleaning up technique in my basics while I learn new moves in Intermediate Inversions.
What are you working on artistically?
Choreography! And adding inversions into my freestyle.
What is your favorite move?
Basic invert or crucifix. I like stretching my spine/back out inverted.
What is in your pole bag (ex: grip aid, journal, etc)?
Legwarmers, socks, dance type shoes/slippers (ballet, lyrical)
Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to?
There’s so much music to choose from and I try not to repeat my song choices in classes. I usually love whatever song I’ve chosen for that class!
We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?
“When Doves Cry” – Prince
“Hungry Like the Wolf” – Duran Duran
“Rhymin & Stealin” – Beastie Boys
I love the way “When Doves Cry” starts.. the guitar, then the beats, then Prince’s grind-y “yeah yeah yeah yeah,” then the instruments.. There’s so much to love about this song, along with happy, playful memories.
“Hungry Like the Wolf” – this song has so many layers ; and the heavy breathing is awesome.
Beastie Boys – crazy & wild music that inspires the same in me. I got to see them in concert, they were amazing. My favorite concert ever.
The 3 songs I chose represent the time in my life I began feeling a giddy playfulness around music with my friends and dance, and it’s what I feel every time I’m at Divine. I get so excited to let go, dance & play!
Final Question: Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?
Let yourself get lost in the music.
