IMG_7100“Dancing at Divine makes me feel sexy and confident!”

Miss September 2016: Dara

Occupation: Office Manager at DOL

Your motto or favorite quote: Be kind! Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about! – AND –  Words are like weapons, use them wisely!

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? 2 years and 1 month

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? A little kickboxing…and Jazzercise!

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? I was looking for something new to try and saw the Groupon deal.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? My favorite class is Boudoir for sure! It’s freeing and you can work out the stuff in your brain! And, then there’s the stripping.  Ha.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? Dancing at Divine makes me feel sexy and confident!

Platforms or legwarmers? Legwarmers!

What are you currently working on technically? My spins (momentum) and climbing!

What are you working on artistically? Transitions from pole to floor and floor to pole.

What is your favorite move? Straight leg spin on spinny pole.

What is in your pole bag (ex: grip aid, journal, etc)? Girly Grip and Mighty Grip, leg warmers, and my sparkly, red pumps

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? It’s a tie! Booty Wurk by T-Pain and Let Me See The Booty by The Dream

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

1. Time Of Your Life by Greenday — I’ve been blessed with a great life and Perfect (if I do say so myself) children

2. I’ll Be There For You by Rembrandts — Family first!

3. More Than Words by Extreme  —Actions mean more than what you say

Guilty pleasure: Sausage gravy and biscuits!!

Final Question: Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?  Don’t give up!! Whatever you’re struggling with now you will be doing before you know it!

Say hello to Mykel!

Posted by | Student Spotlight | No Comments

Mykel“To adore each other so openly and generously feels like a gift, and I am grateful for it every time I dance…”

Miss August 2016: Mykel

Occupation: Full-time student and mama of two.

Your motto or favorite quote: Close your eyes. Fall in love. Stay there. -Rumi

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? Fifteen awesome months!

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole?  I gave birth, does that count?  On a more serious note, I was fairly unfit but had done a little yoga and some hiking.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? I moved to Seattle, and I was actually looking for yoga classes. When I Googled yoga near my house, Divine showed up in the search. I had a hunch that pole dancing was exactly what I needed to pull me out of my post-move misery. I am so glad I followed the hunch! Dancing at Divine took me through a really dark moment and possibly saved my sanity.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? This is like asking me to choose between my children… I love them both equally but sometimes when one is tough, I like the other one more. No really, I love them equally. Listen: that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? There is so much to love about Divine. That moment just after a dance has finished is my favorite. All the women are looking at their fellow dancers with love and admiration. To adore each other so openly and generously feels like a gift, and I am grateful for it every time I dance, and watch others dance.

Platforms or legwarmers?  Legwarmers! I love they way they look, the way they feel, and how my body feels in them, sliding across the floor.

What are you currently working on technically? Right now I am working on getting stronger and more flexible.

What are you working on artistically?  I am working on bringing more of myself into my moves without compromising my form. For example, remembering to keep my toes pointed or my head up while I add my own individual flair. I have some work to do!

What is your favorite move?  The Stargazer.

What is in your pole bag (ex: grip aid, journal, etc)? My pole bag is the bag I use for everything so, charmingly, it is full of receipts, beach sand, wet wipes, legwarmers, and Dry Hands. If anyone needs spare beach sand, I have some to lend you.

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? Right now: All Night by Beyoncé – I could spend the entire song doing hip circles against the wall.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

1. Driftwood, Travis – – I attended university in England in a village that gets more rain than anywhere else in England. Every Friday night, we went down to the student union and danced to whiny British indie music like Travis. I still (secretly) love it.

2. We Come One, Faithless – – My best and longest friend introduced me to Faithless. I danced with my partner to this band before we married. I went to every possible Faithless concert in my twenties.

3. Ta Da – Spank Rock – – I have Heather Hennessy to thank for this one! I asked Heather to choose my song in a boudoir class, and this was it. It was a dance-changing moment for me. I closed my eyes, let go of my inner critic and danced my heart out. It is still my favorite all-time pole dancing song. Guilty pleasure: I have recently started eating a plant-based diet, except for once a week. On Friday nights I orders sushi and I get the Magma Roll from I Love Sushi. It’s deep fried prawns in a roll covered in hot mayonnaise. It’s so good.

Final Question: Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?  The best advice that I was given when I first started dancing at Divine was “if you run out of moves, just hump the floor.” It was the best advice ever, and I still do it almost every dance!!

Say hello to Julia!

Julia“Don’t quit — you’ll come out the other side stronger and even learn to love what challenged you in the past.”

Miss July 2016: Julia

Occupation: Product Manager

Your motto or favorite quote:  “Be who you are and say what you feel because people who mind don’t matter, and people who matter don’t mind.” – Dr. Seuss

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? I took 101 Mid Nov 2013 so a little over 2.5 years now.

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? I have always been active, but I have never danced beyond my living room or a night out with friends.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? A friend of mine found a Groupon and had been thinking of taking 101. Climbing and flipping around a pole sounded like fun, so I joined her. We both fell in love after the first class.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? I love being upside down. Inversions class feels like home. But I’m stretching myself to get in touch with dance this year. I just finished the Basic Boudoir Series after years of just inverting, and I’m really looking forward to continuing that journey.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? I don’t even know where to start with this question, everything! The women and teachers make every day brighter. Every student finds that thing she excels at. Whether it is tricks, spins, or dance, we all find something that makes us feel strong and empowered. And what’s really special is watching others dance. The person who is quiet for most of class can get on the dance floor, let everything go, and transform. Divine is truly a place where you can stop worrying about what people think of you or who you think you’re supposed to be.

Platforms or legwarmers? I’d have to say legwarmers in the studio, but at home I’ll pull out the heels.

What are you currently working on technically? Right now I’m working towards my Iron-X and Phoenix.

What are you working on artistically?  I would love to embrace dance like I can at home. Getting out of my head while others are watching is still a challenge for me. It’s my 2016 goal to push myself in order to let go of that.

What is your favorite move? Either a layback (it’s simply beautiful) or a handspring (because of the power).

What is in your pole bag? Grip aid, food (when I remember), extra clothing, my Divine journal, and a wrist cover.

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? I can’t say I do. I just started boudoir, so I feel like I’m just learning what music my body likes to move to, which I’m kind of loving at the moment. Thank you to all the teachers and their Spotify playlists – we appreciate it more than you know!

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life?

1. What I Got by Sublime

2. Fragile by Tech N9ne

3. Instant Pleasure by Rufus Wainwrite

Guilty pleasure: Nutella calzone pizza

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?  Find what you love about pole, but also push yourself to explore the hard stuff. Dance has not come easy to me, but the women at Divine have always been there to help me through it. Every day it gets a little easier. There are hundreds of women in our community who have pushed through the frustration of learning a move that doesn’t come naturally at first and can relate. Don’t quit–you’ll come out the other side stronger and even learn to love what challenged you in the past.

Say hello to Sabrina!

sabrina2“This is a place where you can completely be yourself and where you will accomplish things you never thought possible.”

Miss June 2016: Sabrina

Occupation: Localization Program Manager

Your motto or favorite quote: If you are constantly learning, your absolute best work now will be half as good as your average work later.

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? Since 2008! I took Pole 101 alongside some of our current instructors!

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? Only a few ballet classes, but I’ve done a lot of weight training.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? A friend dragged me to an open house. I had the completely wrong idea about what it would be like, but as soon as I saw Angi perform I wanted to sign up. I’ve never been so glad to be wrong in my life.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? Probably inversions, because I love to climb, but it’s really hard to pick one!

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? I love the physical and artistic challenges, and the completely amazing community of women here. This is a place where you can completely be yourself and where you will accomplish things you never thought possible.

Platforms or legwarmers? Legwarmers…but really I prefer minimalist attire.

What are you currently working on technically? I have one last transition to improve (Butterfly to Flatline) before I can graduate to Intermediate Inversions. I. Can’t. Wait.

What are you working on artistically? I’m planning to perform at NW Pole Art in November and I’m thinking of attempting to choreograph my own piece this year. I’ve never done this before, so I’m slightly terrified.

What is your favorite move? For spins, I’d say Flying Angel; for inversions, probably Jasmine — which is funny because it used to be my nemesis move!

What is in your pole bag (ex: grip aid, journal, etc)? Grip aid. Unicorn booty shorts. What else do you need?

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? I have a few: Givin Em What They Love (Janelle Monae & Prince), Ransom Notes (Sohn), Hal (Yasmine Hamdan)

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

1. 912 Greens by Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. I’ve done a lot of travelling when I was younger and this song reminds me of the spontaneity and sweetness of those years.

2. Anything from Led Zeppelin or Sabbath…70s music is my spirit animal.

3. Gymnopédie No. 1 by Erik Satie. When I was a kid and couldn’t sleep, my dad would play this on the piano for me. Guilty pleasure: Really, really bad horror movies. I love things that are ridiculous. Also, singing at the top of my lungs to whatever’s playing when I’m driving around.

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?  Even if a new move seems impossible, just keep at it. Sometimes it takes me months or even a year to be able to do a new move…but there’s no feeling like when you finally nail it.

Say hello to Genevieve!

IMG_6400“Divine brought dance back into my life.”

Miss May 2016: Genevieve

Occupation: Group Fitness Instructor + Personal Trainer

Your motto or favorite quote: “Rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness… give me truth.”

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? Since June 2014. Almost 2 years!

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? Yes, I was already very active before starting pole. I love working out and finding different methods of fitness. I’m pretty determined to be a well-rounded athlete, and was searching for a new type of workout. I danced as a child and wanted to pick up dance again as an adult, but wasn’t sure where to start. Pole was definitely the missing ingredient from my fitness regimen!

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? My mom got me into pole dancing, actually! She took a beginner workshop and Pole 101, and she thought it’d be a really good challenge for me. From that point, I just jumped into a Pole 101 series and absolutely loved it! And yes, my mom still dances at Divine as well :)

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? Depends on what I’m feeling at the time. Spins, when I want to learn something new, but still dance it out. Inversions, when I want to challenge my body and strength. Boudoir, when I want to really get out of my head, put everything I learned together, and focus on evolving my freestyle.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? Divine brought dance back into my life. The empowering environment that Divine has built and established is what makes this place so unique. This place is filled with strong and supportive women from all walks of life. Divine has helped me mentally and challenged me physically so much more than I would have ever imagined.

Platforms or legwarmers? Legwarmers!

What are you currently working on technically? I’m currently working on all the basic inversions on my other side and polishing some advanced spins. Flying Angel is currently my nemesis spin… Can’t seem to get my legs to move the right way, ugh!

What are you working on artistically? Dancing to songs I won’t normally dance to. It’s a great challenge to see what comes out of my body when I’m freestyling to unfamiliar songs.

What is your favorite move? I just learned Vortex on spinny pole. Ohhh so fun!

What is in your pole bag?  Extra shorts, legwarmers, journal, 3 different grip aids (stupid sweaty hands…)

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? My favorite always changes! I’m currently loving “PARACHUTE” by Code Kunst and “Close” by Nick Jonas ft. Tove Lo.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

1. “Who You Are” by Jessie J – Reminds me that everything will be okay and to stay true to myself, despite who or what tries to get in the way.

2. “Born Hater” by Epik High – You do you and that’s all that matters! Don’t let haters bring you down!

3. “Save Rock and Roll” by Fall Out Boy – Music is everything. This song speaks to my soul.

Not so guilty pleasure: Cheese. My stomach and skin hate me when I eat dairy…but it tastes so good…

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers? Don’t be afraid to try! More than likely, you won’t perfect each move the first time you try it and that’s okay! Be patient, but stay determined and you will nail that nemesis move soon. Focus on the journey through your pole dancing, not the destination. You will gain strength as an athlete and as a badass woman.

Say hello to Grace!

Grace“I LOVE the people of Divine.  Aware, empowered, so vulnerable, so strong, loving, supportive, open, compassionate, beautiful, fun, and this kind of sexy that is amplified to goddess levels by all of the previously listed badassary.”

Miss May 2016: Grace

Occupation: training @ a tech company

Your motto: Courage is contagious

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? One year in April 2016!

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole?  No previous dance training. Enthusiasm. But no training. I do identify as active though and have tried everything from fencing to paddle boarding, with a few years of intensely training as a tennis player.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes?  A friend’s life event and an attractive Groupon for the 6-week Pole 101 series. I was the support companion. In the first class, I felt silly and uncomfortable. I giggled. I’m not a giggler?! In the second class, we were doing the body trace and as our hands met our faces, the instructor said ‘now hold your face like it is someone you love.’ I realized I was crying. That surprised me. It also got me curious about what had really been touched. Not in my physical body, but in my being. What needed to be acknowledged, let out, or nurtured? How about my sensuality? Sexuality. Feminine divine. Body image. Self-expression. Self-esteem. Ohhhh so much. And the journey began!

Favorite class – and why? Depends on my mood and what I need from my dance. Spins = play time. Inversions = physical & mental challenge. Boudoir = dancing out my feelings

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? The community. I LOVE the people of Divine. Aware, empowered, so vulnerable, so strong, loving, supportive, open, compassionate, beautiful, fun, and this kind of sexy that is amplified to goddess levels by all of the previously listed badassary. I also LOVE women cheering for other women. It is wild & tribal for me. Bonding & healing.

Platforms or legwarmers?  Legwarmers – for their sliding power

What are you currently working on technically?  Incorporating inversions into my dance & being brave on spinny pole because I’m afraid of both.

What are you working on artistically?  Letting go. Giving myself permission to drop the expectations or rules. Get messy. Trying things that feel uncoordinated, stiff, or ‘ugly.’

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to?  Anything that drips

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life?

1. Fast Car, Tracy Chapman 2. Lucy the Tease, Allan Rayman 3. Criminal, Fiona Apple

Guilty pleasure: Sleeping in. Napping. I am a glutton for sleep.

Final Question: Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers? Hang in there!

Say hello to Katlen!

Katlen

“Divine Movement is my therapy. It is what helps me get through the difficult times, making my life easier, happier, and lighter.”

Miss June 2015: Katlen (Kat)

Occupation: Nanny and Student (Associate in Business)

Your motto or favorite quote: “Let your life’s stage be illuminated by the art of dance.”

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine? For one year and two months.

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? I did street dance for 10 years and just like to go to the gym – the group classes at the gym are my favorite.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? I was missing that kind of activity that could make me feel my soul and make my body great.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? That is a hard question for me because I love all of the classes.  But if I had to, I would say: #1 spins #2 boudoir and # 3 inversions – but it changes from time to time. It all depends on my mood.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine? I love Divine Movement because it is a beautiful community. I love it because I can put all of my feelings into a dance, and in that single moment, make it completely mine.  It’s where I can think about just the dance while feeling the music throughout my body. Where I can cry when I see a beautiful dance from other students and instructors – or just cry to let go of all my frustrations and disappointments without ever having to explain myself. It’s where I feel sexy, happy, tired, accomplished, challenged – that mix of feelings that we all need. Divine Movement is my therapy. It is what helps me get through the difficult times, making my life easier, happier, and lighter. Today I can tell you that I have a beautiful hobby called pole dance. I love the freestyle dancing. I love the quality of the instructors. They have amazing technique and are full of knowledge. They always make me feel I am in a safe place. They teach us that we are capable of more than we think.

Platforms or legwarmers? I love legwarmers.

What are you currently working on technically? I’m working on my basic inversion combos, spinning pole moves, pointing toes, flexibility, and choreography techniques.

What are you working on artistically? I’m working on further developing my pole technique and also on how to connect to the people who are watching me dance (performance technique).

What is your favorite move? I love floorwork.

What is in your pole bag?  Spark (Advocare), legwarmers, grip aid, journal, booty shorts, top, tank shirt, iPod, and shoes.

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? I like the songs that are a mix of slow and fast (like a fast beat with a slow voice or vice-versa) and beats where you can add accents or unexpected moves to.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life?

1. Somewhere over the Rainbow – Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole

2. Jota quest – O vento

3. Charlie Brown Jr – Como tudo deve ser

Guilty pleasure: Chocolate, Victoria Secret, and sleeping in.

Final Question:
Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?
Let the music inspire your movements and Divine inspire your life.

Say hello to Vanessa!

Posted by | Student Spotlight | No Comments

Vanessa“Think about who you want to be.  Have a conversation with your body and decide how you can be the most amazing version of yourself.  It’s going so much fun finding out just how fantastic you are.  If I’m lucky, I may get to be part of that journey with you.”

Miss May 2015: Vanessa

Occupation:  Restaurant Manager

Your motto or favorite quote:  Life is beautiful.

Also, there is nothing I’ve done and no decision I’ve made that has never already been done and documented in the history of humanity.  That thought keeps me grounded and humbled.

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine?   About a year and a half.

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole?  I danced ballet, ballroom, and hula through childhood and my early college years.   After, it’s been mostly ballroom and yoga before I found pole.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes?   I had a friend, who really wanted to do a workshop, talk me into joining.  Needless to say, we loved it!

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why?  Ooooh, quick! Lets flip a coin!

I love them all, but boudoir is something so giving and self loving. (This self loving thing, as a society, we are generally lacking how to positively view ourselves.  *coughbodyimamegcough*)

So, I feel that boudoir is where we can all go to heal, or grow, or love, or be loved.  Whatever we need that day, we have such an awesome chance to find the balance of support and the opportunity to give back to our sisters, when we feel strong.  How amazing is that?

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine?  The celebration of strength, technical skill, creativity, and knowledge.  And the opportunity for discovery.

Platforms or legwarmers?  Yikes!  Legwarmers when I can find mine… I keep losing them so I seem to be dancing in leggings more than anything these days!  I love slippery knee floor work. 😉

Platforms…  When I’m feeling ambitious.

What are you currently working on technically?  Handstands and all things inversions!  And forever chasing the flexibility.  Hooray for fly gym!

What are you working on artistically?  I’m not really sure.  I feel that artistry stems from the meeting of technical skill and what I want to feel in my dance or what I want you to feel through that dance.  I think that’s why I’ve yet to feel the urge to compete.  My dancing is very grounded in the “now” these days.  Less storytelling, more conveying the feels?  If that makes sense.

What is your favorite move?  I’m digging the Running man right now.  I feel so strong and graceful in it.  I feel my whole body working to find that suspension… K, I’ll stop now.

What is in your pole bag (ex: grip aid, journal, etc)?  Booty shorts, leggings, itac, girlie grip, sports bra, rehydrate (advocare), snacks or a sandwich… I love food.

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to?  The Marilyn Manson cover of Sweet Dreams.  Though, really?  I have tons.  I’m that girl who always has a song in class.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

  1. Pupu A `O `Ewa – an old Hawaiian song better known as Pearly Shells.  I grew up with my dad playing ukulele and singing to us.  In time, we learned both the lyrics and the English translation to that song and many others.  It was his way of keeping his heritage alive on the mainland.
  2. Blackbird, The Beatles.  It’s one of my mom’s favorites and now one of mine.  Years ago, it was one of the first songs that  I taught myself on the guitar, because of her.
  3. Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin.  Thats all me.  When I decided that I could only take so much top 40, I went down all the musical rabbit holes I could find.  Gershwin began writing this piece on a train between New York and Boston.  Written between two cities, between classical and jazz, between two world wars, it is 17 minutes of magic.

Guilty pleasure:  Staying in bed all day.  Seriously, only moving to go to the bathroom or to find a snack.

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?  Think about who you want to be.  Have a conversation with your body and decide how you can be the most amazing version of yourself.  It’s going so much fun finding out just how fantastic you are.  If I’m lucky, I may get to be part of that journey with you.

Say hello to Christina!

Christina

“It’s really special to have a community of empowered women who are encouraged and free to be ourselves without judgment.”

Miss April 2015: Christina

Occupation: Online advertising for a sports entertainment company

Your motto or favorite quote: I have two! “The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday.” Then a silly but true one: “I have an irrational fear of wasting a great outfit on an insignificant day.”

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine?  Going on 2 years coming this May! My pole mama was Susan.

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole?  No dance experience (I don’t think being a twerking pro counts lol) but I’ve taken Muay Thai Kickboxing and go to the gym often.

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes?  I saw a YouTube video of a woman (can’t remember her name now) who looked so graceful and beautiful on the pole. It completely changed my outlook on what I thought pole was and later, what I found out it could be. I saw the Groupon for Divine and took the plunge! So happy I ended up in this great community.

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why?  I love them all for different things so it’s hard to choose, but I would say boudoir. Inversions you can hit a plateau sometimes and do find myself getting bored of spins after a certain point. However I feel taking boudoir you are focusing more on the dance rather than the technical and it is a great way to push the reset button on anything you may feel frustrated with. There is always a different way to discover how your body flows or transitions in and out of moves which then you can apply to help you come full circle with your spins and inversions.

What is it that you LOVE about pole dancing at Divine?  YOU. The community! You women are inspiring. I love the diversity of Divine. We have students, mothers, professionals, etc. and we come in all shapes and sizes. It’s really special to have a community of empowered women who are encouraged and free to be ourselves without judgment. Everyone, regardless of background or skill level adds something special to the community and we can all learn something from their dance and getting to know them as a person. I’m just going to say I love you guys and end my rambling now.

Platforms or legwarmers?  Legwarmers! I love slinking around in them on the floor. I really can’t dance in heels yet although recently bought a pair of 6 inch Pleaser heels – I am still practicing just walking around in them at home.

What are you currently working on technically?  Working on flexibility currently – although it has been (and will be) an on-going process. Other than that grip and wrist strength, both are a bit weak for a few of the more technical moves in spins and inversions. Lastly, spinning pole… actually no, I’m still terrified of doing anything on spinning pole so that’s still on the pole bucket list of skills I have yet to start tackling.

What are you working on artistically?  Just finished a great Boudoir Floorwork series with Angie. I definitely needed more floor transitions and accents in my dance. Now I’m working towards blending things to make them my own.

What is your favorite move?  The Rockstar spin. It’s like, oh you think I’m about to do a fireman… BOOM! Leg is up, now what?! Then incorporate a sassy hair flip and it’s money, always looks great haha!

What is in your pole bag?  Dry Hands, Tite Grip, legwarmers, water bottle, phone charger and usually 2 sports bras (packed separately in different pockets). Just in case, because I have forgotten to pack one before inversions classes a few times and no one likes a nip-slip hanging upside down. If you ever forget yours just ask, it won’t be weird, I promise.

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to?  Anything with a good beat or by The Weeknd. But my all-time go-to is Closer by Kings of Leon.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?

1. American Girl by Bonnie Mckee. It’s fun, upbeat and bubbly and describes me after a few drinks lol.
2. Moonage Daydream by David Bowie. Too abstract of lyrics to go into details but if you listen to it you will find my life in that Mick Ronson guitar solo.
3. When You Were Young by The Killers. Song is about a relationship but overall about finding the perfection in the imperfection.

Guilty pleasure:  Keeping up with the Kardashians. I know, I know, but it’s really addicting once you get into it.

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?

Be like Nike, Just do it! But seriously, don’t be afraid at all. That applies to pole moves – your body’s will to live is stronger than you think and 9/10 you will catch yourself – but also don’t be afraid to ask questions, reach out for help and make friends. We are all thinking some form of “what did I get myself into” in the beginning but if you are open to the experience for learning and growing, you will get so much back as a reward!

Say hello to Bethy!

Bethy“I love the girls at the studio, who come from all ways of life and backgrounds, but come together to empower each other.  I love the freedom of expression that we are encouraged to show in our dance.  Lastly, I enjoy the fact that it is the most fun you can have while burning calories and building muscles!  I never look at my clock and say – Ugh, I still have 20 mins left, this is going to be the death of me!”

Miss March 2015: Bethy

Occupation:  IT Software Asset Analyst and part-time Dragon Slayer.

Your motto or favorite quote:  “Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised.” – JRR Tolkien

How long have you been pole dancing at Divine?  I started in September of 2013.

Did you have any previous dance or fitness training before starting pole? I had no dance background, but I have been an equestrian for most of my life.  This does not help when needing to point your toes though!

What made you decide to take pole dancing classes? I have a few friends in LA who are competitive dancers, and they were always having the time of their lives!  So when I found a Groupon deal in Seattle, I just bit the bullet!  Greatest choice ever!

Favorite class? (spins, inversions, or boudoir), and why? This always depends on my mood.  If I am in a mental block, or going through something in life, I like Boudoir.  If it is a normal day though, I love spins!!  I could spin all day if I had the choice!

Platforms or legwarmers? Legwarmers all the way!  I have a natural magnetic pull to the floor from my face, so heels tend to look more worrisome than sexy!

What are you currently working on technically? I say I am working on my inversion passes, but really I am working on more spin pole tricks.  I love the spinning pole!

What are you working on artistically?  I am working on turning off the competitive side of my brain and dancing for myself.  I am hyper-competitive, so leaving my head is always a struggle.

What is your favorite move?  Recently I have been on a twisted grip kick!

What is in your pole bag?  Girly Grip, Heel to Toe, a spare pair of shorts (because I always forget to put them on), both of my PPC costumes (Which include a frying pan and a magic wand), a box of index cards for my pole journal, and my kindle to read between classes or backstage.

We hear you are performing at the upcoming Pacific Pole Championships in LA this month.  Tell us about your pieces!  I am performing in two routines on March 1st for Pacific Pole Championships.  My solo is level 1 entertainment, where I am a housewife trying to decide to kill my husband, or my Mexican lover with a frying pan.

My second routine is the one I am more proud of!   It is a group showcase routine based off of Harry Potter.  It involves 5 Divine ladies, who were not all close friends before we started it.  We have been working on the dance for several months now and it has actually been such an amazing adventure learning this dance, and getting to know the other girls on a whole new level!  We are already planning for our second nerdy routine for Pacific North West Pole Art in November and started a group blog called The Pole Nerds to talk about our crazy adventures!

**UPDATE**  We are happy to report that Bethy took FIRST PLACE for her solo routine!

Do you have a favorite song to pole dance to? I am the biggest ham, so I love SHOWTUNES!  Anything from a musical I will dance to!   But I believe my favorite song would probably be “Quiet” from Thirteen Stories Down.

We LOVE music at Divine. What 3 songs would be featured on the soundtrack to YOUR life, and why?
1.  Times Like This – From Lucky Stiff –  It is a song that a girl who volunteers at a shelter decides that dogs are a ton better than a boyfriend.  I feel any girl who likes animals can relate to this!
2.
Clever Girl – The Doubleclicks – Who wouldn’t need a song about Dinosaurs on the soundtrack to their life?!
3.
Accident Prone – written by Laurence O’Keefe and Kristen Guenther – I own the award for the most awkward injuries and breakups, and some went hand in hand, but it is so empowering!

Guilty pleasure: Eating Pringles, and reading horrible books about dystopian societies!  If I could do both while lounging in a hot tub and playing Assassin’s Creed, I would never leave my house!  (I can reorder Pringles online)

Any inspirational advice you would like to share with new polers?
Go at your own pace, and listen to your body!  As a competitive person, I was always trying to get to the next level in dancing, and missing the journey!  Enjoy the trip and stop looking at the finish line!
